Methodology

A prediction only means something if the conditions for being wrong stay visible.

The Economic Systems Monitor is a prospective test. Its baseline was frozen before the evidence tracked by the monitor arrived. This page documents how later observations enter the record, how they are classified, how systemic relationships are assessed, and what would strengthen, weaken, or falsify the prediction.

BASELINE

Freeze the claim.

Establish the prediction, relevant mechanisms, baseline conditions, and criteria for disconfirmation before observing forward.

OBSERVATION

Record what changes.

Add materially relevant post-baseline observations to a cumulative evidence ledger, including evidence that moves against the prediction.

RELATION

Track transmission.

Examine whether pressure remains contained or begins moving through economically meaningful relationships across domains.

TEST

Keep the exit open.

Ask what subsequent evidence would weaken the interpretation, demonstrate repair, restore independence between domains, or otherwise disconfirm the prospective claim.

The baseline separates prediction from retrospective explanation.

The DFTR economic prediction was placed on the record before the subsequent observations tracked by this monitor. The baseline is therefore treated as fixed. Later developments can strengthen the prospective case, weaken it, complicate it, or ultimately falsify it. They do not retroactively alter what the prediction originally required.

EVIDENCE SELECTION

What enters
the ledger?

Not every economic headline is evidence for the prospective test.

An observation belongs in the Evidence Ledger when it is sufficiently material to bear on a preregistered condition, a relevant economic buffer or repair mechanism, or a plausible cross-domain transmission pathway.

Materiality

The development must change something meaningful about the state, direction, capacity, or relationship being monitored. Ordinary fluctuations and repetitive headlines do not enter merely because they concern the economy.

Baseline relevance

The observation must be interpretable relative to the August 20 baseline or to a mechanism specified by the prospective prediction. Evidence is not included simply because it appears alarming in isolation.

Evidentiary support

The operative factual claim should be supported by reliable evidence. Primary sources are preferred where available, with authoritative reporting used for verification, context, and developments not directly observable in a primary document.

Non-duplication

A new article about an already-recorded condition is not automatically a new observation. The underlying state, mechanism, magnitude, or relationship must have materially changed.

CLASSIFICATION

Evidence
can move
both ways.

Direction describes what an observation does to the prediction, not whether the event itself is “good” or “bad.”

STRENGTHENING

The evidence moves in a predicted direction.

The observation provides additional support for one or more preregistered conditions or mechanisms. It does not, by itself, confirm the entire prediction.

COUNTEREVIDENCE

The evidence moves against the prediction.

The observation indicates normalization, restored capacity, reduced coupling, successful repair, or another development that weakens part of the prospective case.

MIXED

Material evidence points in more than one direction.

An observation may strengthen one mechanism while weakening another, or support competing interpretations that cannot yet be responsibly resolved.

IMPORTANT

“Strengthening” means that evidence for a prospective condition strengthened. It does not mean that the economy strengthened.

THE PROSPECTIVE CONDITIONS

What are
we actually
testing?

Individual observations matter because of what they tell us about these larger conditions.

COUPLING

Rising Cross-Domain Coupling

Stress increasingly propagates through relationships between economic domains rather than remaining isolated inside the domain where it originated.

Evidence against it: durable uncoupling, successful containment, or sustained normalization in which deterioration in one domain stops transmitting materially into others.
REPAIR

Weakening Repair Capacity

Ordinary mechanisms for absorbing pressure, restoring function, or reconstituting lost capacity become less effective relative to the load placed upon them.

Evidence against it: durable restoration of function, rebuilding of buffers, successful reabsorption of displaced load, or correction that persists without producing comparable strain elsewhere.
INTERVENTION

Costly or Conflicting Intervention

Maintaining stability increasingly requires intervention that is larger, more frequent, more expensive, or in tension with the needs of another part of the system.

Evidence against it: ordinary policy mechanisms restore function at declining or manageable cost without generating material cross-domain conflict.
NORMALIZATION

Disconfirming Normalization

The monitor explicitly records evidence that conditions are stabilizing, buffers are recovering, relationships are uncoupling, or earlier stress is being durably repaired.

Why it matters: sustained normalization is not noise to be explained away. It is part of the prospective falsification test.
FEEDBACK, BUFFERING & REPAIR

A response
is not necessarily
repair.

Systems can perceive a problem, respond to it, and still fail to restore the relation that is generating the pressure.

This distinction is central to how the monitor interprets apparent correction. DFTR does not require institutions, households, firms, or markets to be incapable of receiving feedback. The question is what happens after feedback arrives.

FEEDBACK

The system registers a change.

A price signal, loss, shortage, default, political response, change in demand, market repricing, or other information becomes perceptible.

CORRECTION

Something responds.

Behavior changes. A firm restructures. A lender retreats. A household substitutes. Policymakers intervene. Exposure may be reduced locally.

REPAIR

Function is restored.

The relevant capacity recovers in a durable way without simply displacing an equivalent or greater burden into another part of the system.

BUFFERING

Buffers can prevent failure without removing the stressor.

Savings, inventory, refinancing, price cuts, substitutions, credit access, government intervention, spare capacity, and institutional redundancy can all absorb load. That matters. A functioning buffer is evidence of capacity.

But buffering and repair are analytically distinct. A buffer may buy time while being depleted, transfer costs elsewhere, or preserve output by increasing strain on another actor. The monitor therefore asks not only whether pressure was absorbed, but how it was absorbed and what happened to the absorbing capacity afterward.

UNIT OF ANALYSIS

The arrow matters
as much as
the node.

The monitor tracks economic domains. Its primary analytical object is the relationship between them.

A weak housing market, a high Treasury yield, tighter private credit, or household stress can each be important independently. DFTR becomes more specifically testable when evidence establishes a mechanism by which pressure in one part of the system changes conditions in another.

A plausible transmission pathway exists, but the post-baseline evidence is not yet sufficient to treat the relationship as materially developing.

Emerging

Post-baseline evidence indicates that the proposed transmission mechanism may be operating, but the relationship remains incomplete, early, or materially uncertain.

Observed

Evidence supports both the relevant developments and a materially meaningful mechanism connecting the domains.

Weakening or Repair

Later evidence can reduce confidence in a relationship, show that transmission has weakened, or indicate that the relevant capacity has been durably restored.

HUMAN REVIEW

New factual evidence can enter the public Evidence Ledger as it is verified. Changes to the higher-order Current System State—adding, removing, upgrading, or downgrading a relationship—are reviewed separately before publication.

COMPETING EXPLANATIONS

What else
could explain
what we're
seeing?

A pattern is not evidence for DFTR merely because DFTR can describe it.

Material observations should be evaluated against credible competing explanations. Those explanations can include normal business-cycle dynamics, sector-specific repricing, temporary shocks, ordinary policy transmission, measurement effects, substitution, technological change, or other mechanisms that do not require the broader relational interpretation.

Where the available evidence does not distinguish among plausible explanations, the record should preserve that uncertainty rather than converting ambiguity into support.

THE SYSTEMIC COLLAPSE THRESHOLD · P8

What would
count

collapsing?

P8 is deliberately harder to satisfy than “the economy looks bad.”

It is the strongest endpoint in the prospective prediction: a qualifying systemic disruption in which stress is no longer being adequately contained by ordinary economic buffers and repair mechanisms.

NOT ENOUGH

Deterioration

High rates, weak hiring, household pressure, falling confidence, market losses, credit stress, or declining investment can strengthen parts of the prospective case without satisfying P8.

NOT ENOUGH

One failing domain

Even severe disruption can remain bounded. P8 concerns systemic propagation rather than the magnitude of one isolated failure alone.

REQUIRED

Cross-domain disruption

The qualifying event must involve economically consequential transmission across domains rather than deterioration that remains locally contained.

REQUIRED

Inadequate containment

The ordinary mechanisms that buffer pressure or restore function must become insufficient relative to the disruption they are attempting to absorb.

CURRENT STATUS NOT TRIGGERED

P8 is not changed automatically by the daily evidence process. Any proposed change to the systemic collapse threshold requires separate review against the prospective criteria.

DISCONFIRMATION

What would
make the
prediction fail?

A prospective test needs more than evidence that can support it. It needs observable conditions that can move against it.

Sustained normalization

Material stress recedes across the monitored system rather than repeatedly reappearing in adjacent domains.

Restored buffers

Household, corporate, financial, physical, or public capacity rebuilds sufficiently to absorb subsequent shocks without continued depletion or material burden transfer.

Durable repair

Corrective responses restore function and the restored capacity persists rather than requiring progressively more costly intervention.

Cross-domain uncoupling

Stress in one domain stops producing material deterioration in the connected domains through the mechanisms being tracked.

Failure of the predicted mechanisms

The specific transmission, buffering, repair, or intervention dynamics anticipated by the prospective framework do not appear as the observation window develops.

A single positive indicator does not establish disconfirmation for the same reason a single negative indicator does not establish collapse. The relevant question is whether normalization becomes sustained, relational, and systemically meaningful.

DAILY

Evidence Ledger

Qualifying, sufficiently supported observations can be added to the public ledger as they are identified. Direction, domains, relevant conditions, alternative explanations, and prospective tests are recorded with them.

WEEKLY REVIEW

Current System State

The accumulated record is reviewed for changes to the higher-order relational interpretation. Proposed changes to coupling relationships are reviewed before the public system state is altered.

EXPLICIT REVIEW

P8

The systemic collapse threshold is not triggered by an automated count or by accumulation alone. A proposed status change must be assessed against the prospective endpoint criteria.

REVISION PRINCIPLE

Corrections should change the current record without silently erasing the earlier one. Where evidence is corrected, superseded, or materially reinterpreted, the change should remain visible as part of the audit trail.

THE TEST REMAINS OPEN

The point
is not
to be right.

The point is to make the claim specific enough, early enough, and public enough that later evidence can tell us whether it was right.
